Special Weekend

Played guest foodie judge on the new reality TV show, The Great Aussie Cookout on a farm near Gerringong on the weekend. Thought I was back in Melbourne being alternatively cold, drenched and sunburnt. Hosts are the lovely Jo Bailey/Silvani and Vince Sorrenti who is as funny as you’d expect him to be.

Interesting concept and clearly a lot of time, money and research had been put into it, except they wouldn’t let me be nasty. Expect to be bombarded with foodie TV shows over summer with the success of Masterchef.

I was lucky enough to attend a soiree For Penguin authors last week and there will be some very nice books coming out for Christmas. Monica Trappaga’s book on family recipes for kids leaving home sounds terrific as does the next instalment for Mr Nice Guy Lucio Galletto and wordsmith David Dale. My chum Guillaume Brahimi and wife Sanchia are working on something much more than a cookbook with the proceeds all going to charity. They are terrific people.

My next tome is not due till the New Year in time for Mother’s Day but more of that nearer the date.

As usual eating for Australia, the recent highlights being great meals at Bells at Killcare, Neil Perry’s Rockpool Bar & Grill, Quay, Spice Temple and Bodega as well as very good food at Flinder’s Inn and Etoille (yes, I am overdue an eating trip to Melbourne). The standout dishes were Pete Gilmore’s remarkable toffee coated snow eggs at Quay, Perry’s char grilled Cape Grim rib eye at Rockpool (if you find a better steak in this country, eat it), Steve Manfredi’s blissfully simple roast Flinders Island lamb at Bells and a sous vide lamb loin at Bodega.

I was at Bodega early Saturday night, before another Wallabies atrocity, and the team were off to Argentina the next day to buy equipment for their new South American BBQ restaurant in Cleveland St Surry Hills which opens early next year. If it is a patch on Bodega-happy days.
